Friends, we greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
In this study, we bring you the introduction to our series on the subject of DEATH. Death is basically the cessation of life. It is a reality that we see all around us; yet, like vapour that passes through our fingers into the thin air, its mystery has eluded the simple as well as the learned. From ancient times people from all walks of life have pondered over the question of death. Yet, despite all the knowledge that we have been able to acquire over the centuries, the question of death still remains a mystery yet to be unraveled. To many secular people, death is simply a reverse of the life process whereby the dead person enters into a state of nothingness.
In the religious world, however, several doctrines abound on the subject of death. The diverse teachings do not usually seek to explain the mystery of death but most often try to present a viewpoint on what happens to man after death. For instance, some religious groups view death as the transition of man from the physical state of life to a spiritual state of life; others view death as a process of reincarnation from one life form to another based on the deeds of the previous life; others view their dead as having immediate life after death in the presence of God or in torments in hell; some groups also view death as a total annihilation while others view death as a temporary sleep to be followed by a resurrection at some point in time.
The plethora of varied explanations on death out there have left many people confused in regard to this all important topic. But the good news is that despite all the diverse interpretations on death out there, the Bible, God's Authoritative Word, provides clear realistic answers on the subject. And so in this series, we are going to find out what God's Word has to say on a number of issues about death. This series, we believe, will clear the minds of many on the mystery of death, and actually give every reader ample reasons to face the reality of death with courage and hope.
